Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP)-Cebu Launches First Golf Tourney On April 7

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP)-Cebu Council forays into golf as it launches the 1st Don Gil Garcia Friendship Golf Tournament on April 7 at the Cebu County Club in Banilad, Cebu City.

The tournament is a fund-raising activity for BSP-Cebu Council, and all proceeds of the event will be used to acquire a new lot to be converted into a training and camping ground for the boy scouts.

Lawyer Joseph Baduel, BSP Cebu Council chairman, said lawyer Augusto Go committed to donate PHP3 million to the BSP-Cebu Council for the camp site project.

But the lot they are eyeing costs PHP20 million.

“We have checked 15 different sites in mountainous parts of Cebu. In all the 15 that we have visited, there is one lot which is really good for a training site and it is in Barili,” said retired Judge Meinrado Paredes, the chairman on camping and activities of BSP-Cebu Council.

The 10-hectare lot in Barili, Cebu has the water supply and electric connection which are essential for a training site, said Paredes.

Paredes said they were offered a free lot in Ronda, Cebu but the place is not ideal as a training site.

Tournament president Hernando Streegan said they chose golf as one of their fund-raising activities because it attracts sponsors and private companies that can help them with the endeavor.

If the lot will be bought, this will be the first training camp in Cebu owned by BSP-Cebu Council.

The Regional Boy Scout Camp in Capitol Hills, Cebu City is operated by the BSP national office.

The one-day golf tournament is an 18-hole strokeplay match.

The players will competing in Class A, B, C and Ladies divisions.

Tournament chairman Nonoy Tirol said they are expecting around 120 golfers in the tournament.

A Harley Davidson Street 750, which is worth PHP495,000, will be the prize for a hole-in-one in the Par-3 holes.

Another Harley Davidson will be given to the lucky winner on the raffle draw.

The raffle ticket will be sold at the venue of the tournament at PHP1,500.

Registration fee for the members of CCC is at PHP2,500 and PHP3,500 for the non-members. (PNA) LAP/EB/MP/EBP
