BJMP to Detail K-9 Dogs in Jail Facilities
By next year, every jail facility maintained by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) within region 7 will be secured with at least 1 K9 dog to prevent entrance of illegal drugs, bombs, and other related matters.
BJMP described illegal drugs as the number one problem beset by almost all jail facilities not only in region 7 but in the whole country as well.
J/J02 Ma.Roselle P. Escaño explained the importance to have sniffing dogs as their partner in their daily operations.
Escaño said the proliferation of shabu and other illegal drugs delivered by either male or female inmate visitors may sometimes left undiscovered by the security personnel.
“But with the presence of a sniffing dog, everything like shabu, and other illegal drugs and even bombs can not escape but to be surely caught”, Escaño pointed out.
Escaño said K-9 dogs can help a lot in boosting the government’s capability to win its campaign against illegal drugs.
“So our higher-ups are considering now to detail at least 1 K-9 dog in every jail facility within the region to help jail wardens in watching illegal drug materials attempting to enter within the jail premises”, she said.
But due to budget constraint, the BJMP may give priority to big jail facilities in the region where these K-9 dogs are detailed.
Escaño said the BJMP regional office is now maintaining 1 K-9 dog assigned at the Cebu City jail. She also stressed the difficulties in the acquisition of this high profile dogs, from its sources, prices, caring, food quality, health, and the most important among all, is its training aspects which needs an intelligent trainer.
“So even how expensive, if it can do lot of jobs which can not be done by human beings in favor of the government, the BJMP is ready to invest it,” said Escaño.
She, however failed to mention the number of puppies being trained now by the BJMP central office in Manila which will be deployed once their capability warrants.
