BFP Holds 2nd Fire Olympics in Maasin City
A total of 85 participants from the seven barangays of Maasin City joined the Fire Olympics initiated by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Wednesday, April 24 at the Capitol Sunken Garden here.
“A minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 were allowed to register in each barangay,” said Raul A. Inocando, Fire Officer III and BFP Information Officer-designate.
The participating barangays include Tunga-tunga, Mantahan, Mambajao, Ibarra, Soro-soro, Combado and Asuncion, he added.
“This Fire Olympics is one way of enhancing or reorienting the skills that had already been taught since the barangay participating teams were already trained on basic firefighting skills years back,” Inocando said.
There were three stages in the time-based competition, namely: the bucket relay where a container from a two-meter distance will be filled with water, the actual firefighting using fire hose targeting a fire, and the emergency medical rescue which demonstrated thee patients as fire victims.
For demonstration purposes, assigned BFP firefighters showed a sample presentation of the 3 stages before the competition started.
Brgy. Mambajao team emerged as the first placer followed by Brgy. Mantahan and Brgy. Soro-soro as second and third place, respectively. Each winner went home with certificates and cash prizes.
Maasin City Fire Marshal Lino B. Asumbrado in his welcome remarks was grateful for the volunteers who came and gave their generous time and energy and as role model to the youths and the next generation.
“This activity gave each participant a chance to become a true firefighter, who brought talents, dedication and commitment for the job they are tasked to do as a volunteer firefighters,” Asumbrado said.
All participants from each barangay also took their oath of allegiance as members of the Community Fire Auxiliary Group of BFP-Maasin City in an oath-taking ceremony administered by Asumbrado. (LDL/RGC/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
