Beware Of Heatstroke, Health Official Warns
With rising temperatures, a health official from the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte warned the public to safeguard themselves against heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Dr. Rogelio Balbag, chairperson of the committee on health of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, reiterated a Department of Health advisory on Monday enjoining all Ilocos residents to take necessary precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We enjoin the public to protect themselves from heat stroke and heat exhaustion by drinking more than the average 8-12 glasses a day and avoid physical activity for long periods of time outdoors or under the heat of the sun.
During the hot summer months of April and May, the local health department observed a number of tricycle drivers in Laoag City who were among the victims of heatstroke apparently because of the nature of their work.
In a DOH advisory, it stressed that the risk of heatstroke, which is considered a medical emergency, increases during hot and humid conditions.
Should sun exposure is unavoidable, Balbag said people must wear long-sleeved cottony clothing, wide-brimmed hats or umbrellas.
Meanwhile, the public is also advised to watch out for their health safety as diseases like summer diarrhea, sore eyes, and dog bites among others are prevalent during the hot season.(PNA) FFC/LGA
