Bantayan Island’s Barangay Workers Receive Cash Incentives from Capitol
With posts mostly entrusted to men, two women barangay tanods of Bantayan Island proved that anyone can help when it comes to securing law and order.
Nenita Supapo and Rubielyn Lugnasin, both aged 33 from Bantayan Island, north Cebu, said that they even consider being women barangay tanods as an advantage since those who often gets into trouble, listen to them.
Supapo and Lugnasin were among the 1,855 barangay workers of the towns of Bantayan, Madridejos and Sta Fe in Bantayan Island who lined-up last Feb.15 to receive cash incentives from the Provincial Government.
Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale led the distribution of cash incentives to barangay tanods (BT), barangay health workers (BHW), daycare workers (DCW), barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), lupon tagapamayapa, and barangay animal health aide (Baha).
“Gamay ra kaayo ni ikumpara sa inyong sakripisyo sa inyong barangay, salamat kayo sa inyong tabang,” said Davide in his message to the barangays workers.
Cebu Province turned over a total of P3.516 million cash to the island’s barangay workers, whom the Capitol officials refer to as community front-liners.
Magpale believes that despite the risks of the job, lady law enforcers are effective since they are good in calming down people with violent and aggressive behaviors.
Cash-for-work program
After the turnover of cash aid, Davide and Magpale went straight to Barangay Malbago in Daanbantayan town to distribute shirts to beneficiaries of the cash-for-work program.
“Ready na ang P5 million fund alang sa cash-for-work program, ug paninguhaon ko nga ma-release this month or early March,” said Magpale.
The vice governor said there are 696 beneficiaries for the Department of Labor (DOLE) cash-for-work program fund, which is downloaded to the Capitol, intended for those affected by typhoons Urduja, Agaton and Ruby.
Dubbed as Tulong Pangkabuhayan para sa Displaced and Disadvantaged Workers, beneficiaries come from 17 barangays of Daanbantayan. Some of them are members of Daanbantayan Women’s Federation.
Through the program, beneficiaries do community work for 30 days and gets paid by DOLE through the Capitol.
