A Tribute to The Guy I Hated and Loved: Severus Snape
I have been reading the Harry Potter series since I was in grade school. In those 7 books and 8 movies, there is no character I have the greatest respect for but Severus Snape. Severus Snivellus Snape is perhaps the only character that I will never get over. I hate and love him.
Severus Snape is played by the ever so talented Alan Rickman who died of pancreatic cancer on 2015. He had other movies, but just like Wolverine, I will always remember him as Snape.
All throughout the Harry Potter series, Snape was always the one I could not figure out. It always seemed like he was keeping a secret. And up until his confession to Harry, I did not, for the life of me, figure out whose side he was on.
Alan Rickman also did a spectacular job in portraying Snape. His portrayal added to my hate/love for the character. And just like Snape, his memory will never die.
So here’s a few things I got out of Severus Snape. He will always be remembered. Always.
Snape is exactly proof that love, true love never fades, never withers, never dies.
Snape loved Lily Evans (Harry’s mother) since they were kids. Even when Lily married another man, he still loved her. Even when she died, he loved her through her son. True, he always insulted Harry, always put him down. To be honest, he loathed the kid. But on things that truly mattered – Harry’s life – he cared. Deeply.
He saved Harry’s life countless times. He did not broadcast it though. Which, for me, made it even more special and true.
That leads me to another reason why Snape should always be remembered. He never broadcasted the good things that he did. Saving Harry, saving Dumbledore, saving Hogwarts, helping Sirius. He never broadcasted it.
It was one of the reasons why he had a bad reputation. It seemed like he hated everyone and never did anything good.
But that never stopped him. He did not care about his reputation because he was always looking at the bigger picture. And quite honestly, the Battle of Hogwarts would not have been successful if it weren’t for Snape. You owe him a lot, Hogwarts!
Another thing is that he is the most flawless double-crosser ever existed. I never knew which side he was cheering for until the very end. He always kept people guessing.
Needless to say, I cried like a baby when he died. And I cried again when Alan Rickman died.
Snape, Alan, you will always be remembered. Even when I’m old and withered, after all that time, I will still remember you. Always.
