Badian, Cebu Invests in BNSs for Nutritional Improvement
This 3rd income class municipality southwest of Cebu invests in its human capital as it boasts its tourism industry. The Municipal Nutrition Committee under the leadership of its Chair and Mayor Carmencita L. Lumain alloted resources for the training of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs). Thirty BNSs attended the Basic Course Training for BNSs held on 25 to 28 September 2018 at the Badian Training Center, Badia, Cebu. The BNSs were joined by five nurses under the DOH’ Nurse Deployment Program assigned in the Badian so these nurses can also help supervise the trained font-line nutrition workers.
Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Urduja B. Espiritu in her welcome remarks during the opening program encouraged the BNSs to do their part in improving the nutrition situation of this tourist-rich municipality. Ms. Loreza A. Lapinid, RND and Mr. Soje A. Tapulado, RND, nutrition program focal persons of the Province of Cebu served as trainers during the capacity-building activity of the municipality.
The training introduced to the volunteer workers of Badian the scope of their work and the skills that they need to carry out their functions. The BNS training covered topics like: the legal mandate and rationale of the BNS program, basic concepts of food and nutrition, the skills needed in performing the roles and tasks of BNSs, the nutrition program management at the barangay level and in the context of local development system, and, the numerous roles and responsibilities of BNSs in the context of nutrition program management at the barangay level.
With this training, the Badian Municipal Nutrition Committee hopes that the nutrition situation in the barangays of Badian would improve and ultimately trickle up to the municipal level as this home of the famous “canyoneering” town soar high as one of the tourist destinations of the country and the world.
