Only Dead Bodies are Sure of Themselves

Published

It is easy to live in fear of uncertainties. With the expanse of the universe and the tiny dot of our one-life existence, you may have no clue at all about the what, when, where, who, why, and how of your meager actuality. The natural course of action to take would be to venture out and find out, but fear is a powerful immobilizer.

“At least in my staying still, there is certainty,” this is the defense tool of fools standing back and overthinking in the sidelines, of quiet ones who never speak up in class or a business meeting, of dead bodies buried six feet under.

Yet, our desire of surety is not without sense. We like what is predictable and controllable because there is security there. Admittedly it would be better if we knew who we were and the things we get ourselves into before we get into them but that is not entirely possible. Living consists wildly of bumbling through the world until you find something, or even someone, you are just comfortable enough to be unsure with.

Certainty is not the goal here. Certainty is a pipe dream, a fleeting sensation, a dead man’s trait for while we are certain the clock will keep on turning, we are uncertain of what to do with all the time it gives. Time is quantified for our convenience, but with it, what do our lives amount to? Uncertainty may be thriving here, but ultimately it is us who decides. Should we quiver over the unavoidable or find a home in it?

There are video games that give you three lives, a cat is rumored to have nine, but you only have one body to spare; spend it exploring and embracing the uncertainties instead of cowering from them.

Away with all your fears, for as long as you live you should never be sure and never be still - only dead bodies can be so sure of themselves.
