P5.4-million worth irrigation system has been turnovered at Barangay Union, San Francisco, Camotes on July 19, 2018 by the Cebu Provincial Government and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) 7.

Barangay Union is one of the barangays near Lake Danao that will have the pilot irrigation system.

Lake Danao is said to be a bountiful source of water supply for crops. In 2015, research and testing was conducted and it was found out that the water in the lake could support the farms around the lake.

Cebu Provincial Governor Hilario Davide III urges the beneficiaries to maximize the new irrigation system. In the turnover, the government distributed seed, farm tools and machineries, including solar tunnel dryers, drip irrigation and multi-purpose drying pavements.

The water in Lake Danao has less saline and could support crops including corn, ampalaya, okra, spring bean, tomato, chili, squash and cassava.

The irrigation system at Brgy. Union is a pilot project of the Cebu Provincial government and NIA 7 and will be expanded in Lake Danao worth P50 million. The expansion of the irrigation system in the lake will benefit 1,500 farmers in 6 barangays. (Cebu Prov. Gov’t)
