PRRD Vows to Raise Teachers’ Pay
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte vowed to increase the salaries of teachers.
“Ang inyo, kayo ang isunod ko,” (I will raise your salary next) the President told teachers and principals in a speech at the 37th Principal Training and Development Program and National Board Conference in this city on Friday, May 4.
However, the President said the amount would not be double their current rates as the country lacks the resources to afford it.
The basic salary of soldiers, policemen and other uniformed personnel earlier was increased with the entry pay being doubled.
The President said the teachers’ salary increase would be done in increment as the economy improves.
In the same speech, the President said the government would need more sources of revenues to fund the various programs including the proposed pay hike for teachers.
An entry level teacher is pegged at Salary Grade I (Step 1) or an equivalent of P20,179 under the third tranche (2018) of the Salary Standardization Law of 2015.
Under Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law, take home pay of employees including government teachers has been increased with the reduction of income taxes. (PIA 11/RGA)
