Cebu Among SEA’s Safest Cities Because of Public’s Help: Chief Cop

The emergence of Cebu City as among the safest cities in Southeast Asia could be attributed to the Cebuanos’ active participation in crime prevention, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) chief Senior Supt. Joel Doria said Monday.

Although the police played a big role in maintaining peace and order, Doria said the public’s cooperation and vigilance is the main factor why Cebu City came out as among the safest cities in the region.

“Without the help of the public, the police would never be able to solve crimes and keep the city safe,” Doria said. “So, I thank the people of Cebu City for their cooperation.”

Cebu City is ranked the No. 8 safest city in Southeast Asia with a 55.72 percent safety rate in the latest survey by Numbeo, an online database that provides living conditions of cities worldwide.

Singapore emerged as the safest city in Southeast Asia with an 83.77 percent safety rate and 16.23 crime rate.

Other Philippine cities in the Top 10 are Valenzuela at No. 2 with a safety index of 74.79 percent, Davao (71.21 percent) at fourth, Makati (60.44 percent) at No. 5, and Baguio at sixth with 59.43 percent.

Doria, who was named No. 1 chief of police in the country and one of the Most Outstanding Filipinos by Metrobank Foundation last year, said the CCPO is proud for Cebu City to have attained this status, as this is also an affirmation of their all-out effort to address security and safety concerns in the Queen City of the South.

Police Regional Office – Central Visayas (PRO-7) information officer Supt. Reyman Tolentin said PRO-7 is also proud that Cebu City is the eighth safest city in the Southeast Asia.

Tolentin said the police regional office is elated over this development, as it reflects the performance of the police force, not just in the city but in the whole of Central Visayas.

He assured the residents, as well as the tourists, that the local authorities would continue to make Cebu City safe.

“We will exert more effort and we will aim to put Cebu City on top,” Tolentin said. (PNA)
