Capitol Distributes Vet Supplies To Shield Livestock From El Niño

The Cebu Provincial Government through the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office (PVO) has started distributing P2 million worth veterinary supplies for livestock protection.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale started the distribution in Bantayan Island during the distribution of cash incentives to the barangay workers in the island.

The veterinary supplies include antibiotics, vitamins, minerals, dewormer, seeds for forages, and feeds.

PVO Chief Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy said these will bolster the resistance of livestock against illnesses caused by extreme heat. The province is bracing against the possible outbreak of livestock diseases and other threats attributable to El Niño and the past approaching summer.

Amidst reports of Newcastle Disease (NCD) outbreak in Luzon, Vincoy also assured that Cebu is still NCD virus-free.

She said the disease is an endemic ailment for chickens in the country. Hence, it can recur when the immune system of the chickens is weak.

There is no medical treatment available against NCD but its vaccines are available in the market. The provincial government procured and distributed vaccines to farmers.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) also provides NCD vaccines to the Capitol.

Vincoy stated that there are no NCD cases recorded in Cebu in the last five to eight years. But she added that it would be better to include Newcastle disease vaccination in the backyard and commercial poultry practices.

She further stated that Cebu has enough NCD vaccines. The regional diagnostic laboratory of the DA is the only DA laboratory in the whole country that produced such vaccines.

Vincoy also advised the livestock farmers to be aware of the things to do during extended hot weather.

She said that ruminant animals should be placed under the shaded area or trees. They must be provided with enough water at all times.

For pigs, they must be sprinkled with water from time to time since they are prone to heat stroke. The poultry farm owners should use ventilation. Dog owners should likewise keep their pets at home from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vincoy said that all animals should be provided with vitamins, feeds that are rich in energy, and water.

Currently, PVO is conducting a regular veterinary outreach program in various areas in the province. It is also constantly monitoring the possible adverse effects of El Niño on livestock.
