Cebu City Allots P30M to Improve Evacuation Centers of 21 Villages as Flooding Hits City
The Cebu City Government has allocated PHP30 million in disaster funds for 21 barangays to improve their evacuation centers as flooding hits several parts of the city.
Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC) chairman, cited Republic Act 1012, or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010, which stressed the need to establish and maintain evacuation centers.
Hundreds of residents have to be evacuated after their areas were affected by floods brought by heavy rains during the last few days.
Tumulak said met Tuesday with the barangay captains of Basak Pardo, Sudlon 2, Basak San Nicolas, Tisa, Mambaling, Guadalupe, Punta Princesa, Quiot, Kinasang-an Pardo, Lahug, Talamban, Sambag 2, Barrio Luz, Pahina San Nicolas, Banilad, Labangon, Cogon Pardo, Duljo Fatima, Suba, Pasil and Sawang Calero.
The evacuation centers in these villages nedd to be improved, he said.
“Our aim is to empower all barangays for them to be disaster-resilient,” he said.
Tumulak said some barangays have evacuation centers, but these lack comfort rooms, which should be accessible by persons with disabilities, and water and power supply.
He said the barangay captains will be given their share of the disaster funds once they submit a program of works and estimates.
“Evacuation centers should be structurally sound,” Tumulak said.
They should also be on high ground and accessible to the public, he said. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
