September 9 is a Holiday in Cebu

(Cebu City-PIO) — Pursuant to the Republic Act 6953, September 9 of every year is declared as a special non-working holiday in the entire province of Cebu and its component cities.

The holiday is in commemoration of the birth anniversary of a Cebuano leader Sergio Osmeña Sr. who was the late Governor of Cebu and the Fourth President of the Republic of the Philippines.

In observance with the celebration, the city government here through its Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission will commemorate the 137th Birth Anniversary of the late President tomorrow September 9, 2015 Wednesday.

A Holy Mass is scheduled at 7:30 in the morning which will be officiated by Monsignor Roberto Alesna at the President Sergio Osmeña Sr. marker site located along corner Lapu-Lapu Street and Osmeña Boulevard this city.

Right after the Eucharistic celebration, a short program will immediately follow that will be highlighted by a floral offering to be led by the heirs of the late President.

For the uninformed, the late President was one of the two Visayan leaders who became the chief executive of the Philippine Republic, the other one was Carlos P. Garcia of Bohol. He served as a provincial governor of Cebu, then House Speaker, Senator and Vice President before he became President from 1944 until 1946. (Cebu City Public Information Office PIO)
