Improve the Lifespan and Performance of your Paint Brush

Whether you are a new or experienced DIYer, you should know the benefits a well-maintained paintbrush can bring. Taking care of your paint brushes means crisper paint lines, minimal streaking and little to no bristles and residue getting left behind on freshly-painted surfaces. Cleaning your paint brushes properly prevents them from getting damaged and enables continued use without compromising quality. Here are some tips to ensure your paint brushes are kept in top condition for years to come:

1. Clean your paint brushes as soon as you are finished painting. Note that soaking them may lead to damaged bristles and compromised results in future painting projects.

2. Cleaning water-based paints from your brushes does not have to be an expensive task. Most mild bar soaps and dishwashing detergents get the job done.

3. Use different brushes for water-based paints and oil-based paints. This will make them easier to clean as the different bases require different care.

4. Dried paint residue can form a crusty coat around paint brushes, which affects their bend recovery. A paint brush comb, old golf club brush, or simple fork can remove paint residue without damaging bristles.

5. Storing a paint brush on its tip can cause the bristles to curl and lose their shape. Hanging your brushes on a hook or wire can help to maintain their proper shape and keep them working like new.
