Art Review: Color Contrast
Qube Gallery celebrates its 2nd year anniversary with an on-going exhibit that features the works of Juvenal Sanso and Camille Ver in a two- artist exhibition that opened on January 15 and will end at February 10, 2015.
Juvenal Sanso is a Filipino artist known for his expressive surrealistic landscapes in tropical colors. As an artist, he has won three major awards given by the three countries that have been home to him.
Camille Ver on the other hand is one of the foremost contemporary abstractionists in the Philippines. In recent years, she has been primarily concerned with architectural abstraction. Ver graduated from the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts in 2003, majoring in Painting. She later took a special course in Interior Design at the Philippine Institute of Interior Design.
The works of Juvenal Sanso in the exhibit were mostly black and white and it gave off a different effect to someone who is used to seeing his works in color. However the works still gave off the intricacy and the mystery of his landscapes that is always inherent in his works.
Having the colors in black and white made the work even mysterious or creepy especially if the viewer imagines to be inside that landscape. The black and white also made the artwork more classical so the viewer also gets to be teleported at a place that belongs to the past.
Camille Ver’s small abstract works, on the other hand because of its size, somehow makes you double think about your expectation on art. I don’t expect abstract works to be small so the works had a different effect on me. Maybe this is because of me not getting used to smaller abstract works that I happen to fancy his bigger artworks.
All in all, the exhibit’s concept of having two different artists contrasting each other was a different idea. Something you don’t see all the time and something only the minds and the guts of the people behind Qube Gallery can deliver. So to Qube Gallery’s 2nd anniversary, congratulations!
