Mayor: Daanbantayan Will Be Restored Before Year Ends
Daanbantayan town Mayor Augusto Corro admitted last Monday that they haven’t reached halfway with their rehabilitation works.
Daannbantayan was among the towns in Northern Cebu that was heavily affected by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November last year.
“Sa school buildings, naa pay gap of 30 percent. Ang 70 percent nga gitrabaho, mga 30 to 40 percent pa gyud ang nahuman na. But I’m positive, before the year ends, 100 percent na ta,” said Corro.
Corro said the same is also the case with their infrastructure projects, relocation sites and school buildings. As to the classrooms, the mayor said non-government organizations like Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) are extending help in the repair of damaged structures in their town.
Typhoon Yolanda, one of the worst typhoon recorded, destroyed almost 95 percent of public and private structures and properties in northern Cebu.
Last month, the Yolanda-affected municipalities and city in north Cebu received 80 percent of their requested funds for financial rehabilitation from the national government including municipalities of Bantayan, Borbon, Madridejos, Medellin, San Remegio, Sta. Fe, Sogod, Tabuelan and Bogo City.
An organization based in Luxemburg has also offered to donate some classrooms while the Department of Education (DepEd) has
also promised to build 120 classrooms in the northern Cebu, of which Daanbantayan is among the recipients.
But while these has yet to materialize, the students are currently attending classes under makeshift tents, which is “temporary” while their classrooms are still being repaired, the mayor said.
