Gunman Shoots 13 in Serbia
A veteran of the Balkan Wars went on a gun rampage in the Serbian town of Velika Ivanca on Tuesday, killing at least 13 people.
The town roughly lies 25 miles south of the capital, Belgrade.
Investigators named the 60-year-old suspect, Ljubisa Bogdanovic.
He went from house to house in the village in the early hours, gunning down his mother, his son, a two-year-old cousin and ten other neighbors with 9mm pistol.
Police suspect that the gunman turned his gun on himself and attempted to kill his wife as authorities closed in. The pair survived and are now being treated at a hospital in Belgrade.
Between 5 a.m. and 5:30 am., twelve people were killed immediately in the village, and one person died later in a Belgrade hospital, Serbain police chief Milorad Veljovic said.
Police described Bogdanovic as a veteran of the Serbian-Croatian war in the 1990s who had lost his job last year. Neighbors said the man had never seemed violent.
Investigators said there is still no known motive behind the killings – the worst Serbia has ever seen, according to police.
