CCPO Revives Bicycle Cops
The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has revived the ‘Bicycle Cops’ — a team of policemen who will be tasked to conduct preventive patrols in crime-prone areas — specifically at the tourist spots in the city.
Two private contractors at the City Hall donated 12 ‘Mountain Bikes’ so these can be used by the members of the Bicycle Squad.
CCPO director Noli Romana turned over the donated bicycles to the Tourist Police Unit presently based at Plaza Sugbo in front of City Hall so its members can easily patrol the tourist spots.
According to Romana if there will be more bicycles to be donated to CCPO, he will assign them to the police stations so these can be used by its policemen to patrol the crime-prone areas.
Mayor Michael Rama encouraged the members of the Bicycle Cops to work hard to prevent the occurrence of crimes, particularly against visiting tourists.
In 1998, a Bicycle Squad composed of policemen clad in short pants and T-shirts, was also created but it did not last for long because their bicycles were not properly maintained.
The mayor said the revival of the Bicycle Squad is very timely because of reports that the volume of crime in Cebu City had gone up, particularly against persons and properties.
