Ukraine Braces for Blackouts as Russia Continue to Strike Energy Infrastructure

Ukraine is bracing for a new round of Russian infrastructure attacks, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday.

This comes as Russia has already dealt severe damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, forcing authorities and citizens to prepare for a winter without proper electricity.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko has urged residents to prepare for the worst possible scenario by planning for an emergency to leave the city if the need arises.

Moreover, Ukraine is already mulling a complete blackout, requiring the evacuation of Kyiv’s approximately three million inhabitants.

This comes as even Kyiv’s electricity grid has been heavily damaged by Russian artillery, which is making the unfathomable scenario of a blackout a reality as winter draws near.

According to the Facebook page of YASNO CEO Sergei Kovalenko, Ukraine is facing a projected 32 percent undersupply of power.

YASNO is the primary supplier of power to Kyiv.

“This is a lot, and it’s force majeure,” Kovalenko said.

Meanwhile, to mitigate the deficit in power supply, authorities are mulling the possibility of implementing rolling blackouts in seven regions of the country.

Russia has been placing immense effort in attacking the essential infrastructure of Ukraine amid the mounting losses of the invading force in the battlefield.

Russia is now targeting power plants, substations, and electricity lines around the country in a bid to decrease Ukraine’s morale and stir panic in the masses.

In Kyiv, Russia struck water pumps, which hampered the delivery of running water. Civilians were forced to use old wells for their water needs.

Ukraine successfully shot down 45 out of 55 cruise missiles that were headed for the energy grid of the country on Monday.

However, 350,000 homes lost electricity as some missiles made it past air defense, hitting power plants and substations. (GFB)
