Global COVID-19 Cases Surpass 50M
Global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases globally on Sunday topped the 50 million mark, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University in the US.
Over the 50 million cases, a total of over 1.25 million people have already succumbed to COVID-19, with recoveries hitting nearly 32.9 million.
The US is now nearing 10 million mark and have more than 237,000 deaths, becoming the first country to report 100,000 new cases daily. India and Brazil trail the US in COVID-19 numbers.
October was seen as the worst month of the pandemic as new cases in the past 30 days has accounted for a quarter of all COVID-19 cases.
In Europe, the second wave has recently led to governments to once again tighten restrictions and impose new lockdowns, with shutdowns currently happening in the European countries of England, France, Germany and Greece.
The global COVID-19 death toll now stands at more than 1,250,000, according to Johns Hopkins with the US, Brazil and India recording the most deaths, followed by Mexico and the UK.
India reported the second-highest case count with over 8.5 million, while Brazil had the most fatalities after the US with nearly 162,300
COVID-19 now has spread to 190 countries, after it first emerged in China on December 2019. (GFB)
