Talisay City to Help Poor Students to go to College
It is a fact that even the smartest student can be barred from getting a decent education because of financial matters. Some can only finish elementary or high school then forced to work hard for them to go to college.
Last school year, there were more than 1,000 high school graduates from the public schools of Talisay City who were not able to get to college primarily because of poverty.
Recently, the City of Talisay has launched the “Cream of the Crop”, a scholarship program which aims to give free education to students who graduated from Talisay City public high schools.
The said program will provide qualified students with a P20,000 allowance per semester and the city government will allocate P5 million for funding.
Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas revealed that he let the Department of Education made and implement the guidelines.
“DepEd akong gipahimo sa guidelines, DEPED mu implement sa guidelines, DepEd ang screening committee and DepEd alone ang mupili sa scholars. The only role of the LGU is to provide the 5M funding for the program next year (DepEd will make the guidelines, DepEd will implement the guidelines, DepEd alone will choose the scholars. The only role of the LGU is to provide the P5M funding for the program next year),” Gullas said.
The mayor also said that since then, it was his dream to help poor but deserving students to acquire decent education.
“That’s my dream, to see a poor but deserving student give pride and honor to the city that put him to school. It’s the culture of Filipinos to help out their respective families once they graduate. This is where we can finally see the success of this program. When our scholars get jobs and will be able to help their families. We will get their soon,” Gullas uttered. (MLC)
