Conserve Water — MCWD
Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) urges people to conserve water since its production is seeing a decline due to the lowering of water levels and the saltwater contamination of some of its wells.
MCWD’s water production decreased into 13,000 cubic meters per day in the last two weeks.
A private supplier in the town of Consolacion in northern Cebu also shut down due to the increased presence of chloride in the water.
Only 250 milligrams of chloride levels per liter is acceptable to consider it as potable water and can be supplied to customers.
The shutdown of the said private supplier’s well reduced MCWD’s water production by 7,000 cubic meter per day, affecting the consumers in some parts of Mandaue City and Consolacion itself.
According to MCWD, the water district is only pumping 40% of the groundwater in Metro Cebu. 60% of the extraction is done by private well owners, both domestic and commercial.
Another 3,000 cubic meter was lost in the daily production due to the reduction of the daily yield of Cebu Manila Water Development (CMWD) Inc.’s facility in Carmen, Cebu.
CMWD, a private bulk water supplier, is delivering 35,000 cu. m. of water to MCWD that is being supplied to its consumers in Compostela, Liloan, Consolacion, parts of Mandaue and the whole Mactan island.
The water district is also urging the public to start a lifestyle of conserving and to recycle used water and store rainwater.
Rains can only replenish water sources if it falls on dams, watershed and recharge areas.
Consumers must use only what they need as the water demand in Metro Cebu continues to surpass its existing supply. (MLC)
