The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, May 30, launched a new program called Integrated Curriculum for Cebuano Learners to Engage for Better Understanding (iC Cebu), which will serve as an intervention to address the least-learned competencies of the Cebuano students.

The Cebu Provincial Government, through Provincial Information Officer Ainjeliz Dela Torre-Orong, joined the launching of the new program led by Cebu Schools Division Superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud and other DepEd officials at the Ecotech Center Pavilion in Sudlon, Lahug in Cebu City.

Angtud said the iC Cebu model is an integrated curriculum for Cebuano learners that will focus on problem solving, critical thinking and life skills for better understanding.

According to DepEd, the new model recognizes “the principles of gender equality, gender equity, gender sensitivity, non-discrimination, and human rights to be integrated within and accross the disciplines in all K to 12 grade levels.”

“Instead of giving the usual lesson plan nga na-harvest namo, this time, ang mga master teacher gi-train nato nga kahibaw sila maka-intergrate sa different subject areas… Facilitator ra ang teacher ang bata na ang molihok sa ilang learning,” said Angtud.

The iC Cebu is also based on gender and development (GAD) principles and disaster risk reduction concepts.

“GAD-based meaning tanang opportunity kanang matagaan (ang mga studyante) unya wagtangon sa hunahuna nato nga basta Math gani laki ra maayo ana, basta English, babaye ra maayo ana. Ato nang i-anchor sa mga lessons nato ang equity ug equality,” she said. “Among itudlo sa values education ang love for self kay daghan man kaayo ta mga bata nga (mo-resort to) suicide and everything, and resiliency pud nga bisan unsa kadako sa problem maka-bounce back atong mga bata nga di nalang modungo sa problema.”

Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs and Alternative Learning System G. H. Ambat was the resource speaker during the event.

Other guests were DepEd 7 Assistant Regional Director Salustiano Jimenez, the presidents of the different universities and colleges, and selected teachers from different schools all over the province.

In behalf of Gov. Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes A. Magpale, Orong congratulated the Deped officials of Cebu Province for creating programs that continuously “provide Filipinos the best education.”

“For the past years, DepEd Cebu Province has been one of the Capitol’s number one partners and one of the most active. The Capitol’s projects with DepEd has always been fruitful, hence greatly boosting the education sector in the Province. Improving and supporting education in the Province is part of the 6-key development agenda of the Davide administration and with the active support of DepEd, we have successfully achieved this,” she said.
