5,000 Cebu City Hall Workers Join Anti-Dengue Drive

Some 5,000 Cebu City Government employees Sunday joined the larvicide campaign to help prevent dengue fever in 49 urban barangays.

Cebu City has recorded 868 dengue fever cases since January this year, with eleven deaths so far.

Cebu City Health Department (CHD) chief Dr. Daisy Villa said the widespread application of larvicide was one of several measures to prevent more dengue cases.

She said the chemicals were placed in areas where the dengue-carrying mosquitoes may breed, such as stagnant pools of water, canals and water containers.

The larvicide can stay effective for up to four months in stagnant water, Villa said.

It’s meant to kill larvae before these can develop into adult mosquitoes.

Employees from different City Hall departments led by their respective department heads were deployed to the barangays to apply the larvicide.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also participated in the activity, which was held in partnership with Rotary International District 3860, which provided the chemicals.

Villa said the city will also target adult mosquitoes by conducting misting operations and treating curtains.

She encouraged households to do their share by cleaning their surroundings. (PNA) CTB/EB/EBP
