5.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Davao Area – Phivolcs
A magnitude-5.7 quake shakes Davao Oriental at 7: 58 am on Wednesday, with epicenter at 57 km southeast of Mati Davao Oriental, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. State seismologists warns residents of possible aftershocks.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head Renato Solidum Jr. said there is no chance of a tsunami as the quake is not powerful enough to generate one. Solidum said aftershocks are possible, but damage is not likely.
“Wala naman. Hindi ito ganoon kalakas para mag-generate ng tsunami,” Solidum said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Reports said Phivolcs’ initial bulletin said the quake occurred at 7:58 a.m., with the epicenter at 57 km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental. It added the quake’s origin was tectonic and was felt at the following areas:
– Intensity III: Butuan City; Kidapawan City
– Intensity II: San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur; Cotabato City; General Santos City; Koronadal City; Polomolok South Cotabato; Alabel Sarangani
– Intensity V: Mati, Davao Oriental; Davao City; Toril.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake’s epicenter was at 1 km east-northeast of Tibanbang, 31 km south-southeast of Lupon, 37 km south-southwest of Mati, 60 km south-southeast of Pantukan, 926 km west of Koror Town, Palau.
Last October, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the province of Bohol and some parts of the Visayas leaving some people dead and damage properties.
