Some 400 new scholars will benefit from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) this coming school year.

OWWA Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the scholarship grants are meant for children of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have passed pre-qualifying examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

Eighty-four of the new EDSP scholars came from Region IV-A while the National Capital Region and Region III has 46 each.

Meanwhile, Middle East-based qualifiers from Al Khobar and Riyadh have 21 passers each.

Other qualifiers come from the following regions according to the number of passers: Region VI (43), Region VII (33), Region V (32), Region X (13), Region XI (12), Region XII (10), Regions I and II (9), CAR and Region IX (6), Region IV-B (4), Region VIII (3) and CARAGA with two grantees.

Top and second ranks went to Mark Edward Miranda Gonzales and Eden Jomari Ceniza Cesista, respectively. Both finished their high school in Riyadh. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia although their registered address is Metro Manila.

“I just hope that our new scholars will do their part of this benefit package by being diligent and focused so they would remain as scholars up to the time they finish the course. Their parents have done their part when they became active OWWA members,” Cacdac said.

The EDSP is OWWA’s educational assistance program for dependents of active OWWA members who wish to enroll in any four- or five-year baccalaureate program.

It is competitive in nature, requiring all the applicants to be included in the top 400 of the roster who passed the pre-qualifying examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). An EDSP scholar is granted P60, 000 per school year.
