Four Cebuanos made it to the list of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) Central Visayas last May 2 at the Cebu Capitol Social Hall.

Ten students from different universities and colleges in Region 7 were awarded out of the 20 finalists who comprised the regional search.

These students also got to listen to the thoughts of Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide III on leadership.

“Remember always that the hallmark of a true leader lies in his ability to sow seeds of love, truth, justice and hope in the hearts of others,” Davide said.

“My congratulations to all the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines of Central Visayas and to the alumni. Believe in yourself. Do not be afraid to break tradition, look forward to each day as an adventure, and work hard,” he added.

Jerome Cuyos, a recent graduate of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy of University of Cebu (UC)-Banilad Campus, is one of the outstanding students of TOSP-Central Visayas 2015.

Cuyos graduated Cum Laude last March 2015 and has been an active student during his college days in UC Banilad. He is also a national finalist of the Best Business Idea and Development Award 2014.

“One of the steadfast indicators of a genuine change is an empowered community. It has been my plan to scale up my cause for the broom makers of Barangay Labogon through core group empowerment and development and growth of sustainability fund by teaching them the basics of bookkeeping,” said Cuyos.

“It is my passion and desire to help and share what I have and what I can, especially to the ones who need it the most,” said Jessie Lou Gumban, another finalist.

She graduated Cum Laude with the degree of AB Political Science in the University of the Visayas.

Gumban is a former president of the Supreme Student Council and CAS-Student Council 2014-2015. She was also an awardee of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2015 .

Two other finalists are Danica Blanche Fernandez of University of San Carlos and Adriel Gamier Sanchez of University of San Jose Recoletos.

Fernandez, a BA Political Science graduate, is the co-founder of Young Heroes for Cebu and youth delegate of Young Minds on Explore 2012-2015.

Sanchez is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering last March 2015.

He was also a winner of The Outstanding College Scholar 2014, The Outstanding UNESCO Club Youth Leader of the Philippines 2014 and The Outstanding Cebu City Youth Leader 2015.

“Leadership doesn’t stop; it keeps on growing” said Sanchez.

The other six awardees are Hanz Denzil Villahermosa of Silliman University, Ed Vincent Cahulugan of University of Bohol, Kathleen Dawn Young-Ricardo of St. Paul University-Dumaguete, Hermilo Arbuyes of Holy Name University, Mikle Vito Abing of Silliman University, and Febby Marton Rule of Foundation University.

TOSP Awardees chosen are Filipino youth who serves as a role model of academic excellence, exemplary leadership, good moral values, and social responsibility.

During the nomination, each finalist submits a bid book containing all documents that showcase their achievements and contributions to the society.

Finalists are judged based on their bid book and their interaction during a panel interview.

“Tribu Kaplag” is this year’s regional TOSP batch group name. It is inspired by the 450th Anniversary of Kaplag, which is a Cebuano term for “finding” or “discovery”, in which the celebration refers to the historic finding of the religious relic, the image of the Santo Niño, on April 28, 1565.
