In celebration of the Ramadan 2013  which started last Tuesday, July 9 and will continue for 30 days until August 7, the Third operation of city’s Nigh Market in Colon street opened last July 6, 2013.

The activity is held along the whole stretch of the oldest street in the country – Colon Street. Its third operation this year will last until July 20 which is purposely conducted in time for the Ramadan celebration which is the holy month of fasting for our Muslim brothers and sisters.

The Night Market is a project of Mayor Rama who is known as the People’s Mayor which he initiated way back his stint as a City Vice Mayor. It was created in 2007 right after the Association of South East Asian Nation (ASEAN) summit was held in the city,  in the effort to revitalize the city’s downtown area.

It serves like a Divisoria in Metro Manila which cater the needs of the different people from different walks of life to enjoy buying low priced items from kitchen utensils, household needs, garments, foot-wears, school supplies, and street and finger foods, among others.

The vendors pay P3,000.00 each as rent for the space they occupy for the duration of the whole month activity and they are allowed to sell various items and products from 6 in the evening until 2 dawn time. At least 54 vendors from the Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA) regularly partake in the event.

The month-long activity is conducted four times yearly to wit, every month of January as part of the Sinulog celebration; every month of June as part of the Business month celebration and opening of the classes; every month of July or August in time of Ramadan celebration; and in every middle of November until December for the Christmas celebration.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rama wants to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the area, thus Police visibility is observable in coordination with the Cebu City’s Unified Security Group, and even Barangay Tanods from the nearby barangays to patrol along the vicinity of the Colon street for the duration of activity.  (By: Greggy Jiggs P.
