37 HEIs in Central Visayas to Hike Tuition Next School Year – CHED 7
A total of 37 higher education institutions (HEIs) in Central Visayas will increase their tuition starting next school year, an education official said.
Dr. Josefino Ronquillo, Commission on Higher Education (Ched) 7 supervising education program specialist, at least 41 HEIs applied for the tuition increase but only 37 were accepted by CHED because the four colleges failed to either apply on time or submit the complete documentation.
Of the 37 HEIs which will increase their tuition, 28 are from Cebu, six are from Bohol and three from Negros Oriental.
There are 161 HEIs in Central Visayas, Ronquillo said.
The tuition increase applied for ranges between three and 16 percent.
In 2014, 38 colleges in Central Visayas applied for a tuition raise but only 33 were approved.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) 7 said it expects an increase in enrollment of between three and five percent.
Classes are set to start in about a month.
Dr. Milagros Gabia, DepEd 7 chief of the policy planning research division, said that every year, the agency provides a budget for the construction of new classrooms.
“We always need classrooms and DepEd always allocates funds to close the gap and every year there is a budget for repair. DepEd is also not dependent on the government as other stakeholders are also building classrooms,” Gabia said. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
