300 Farmers Granted Insurance from DA
At least 300 rice farmers from Cebu were granted insurance coverage by the Department of Agriculture (DA) VII during the launching of the International Year of Rice recently.
The DA VII listed 331 rice farmers from all over Cebu, who are now holders of Certificates of Insurance Cover (CICs) and Accident Dismemberment Scheme Cards.
Angel Enriquez, DA Regional Field Unit Officer in charge, said the insurance covers death and dismemberment not only of the farmer-beneficiary but also of the insured animal or crops.
Carcar City (first District) has a total of 121 farmer-beneficiaries, whose land covers a total of 65.85 hectares. Carcar City is known as the rice basket of the whole province of Cebu. Meanwhile, Barili town, with its 35.7 hectares of rice lands, has 74 farmers who received the insurance coverage; while 55 farmers are from Moalboal town with its 29.8 hectares of rice lands. Dalaguete town’s 22 farmers also received the insurance, Argao with 29 farmers; Dumanjug, 8; and Asturias with its 19 farmers.
Enriquez assured that more farmers will benefit from this program now that the DA and the Cebu province have a stronger coordination with regard to the development of the agriculture industry.
