256 Dead, 255 Missing in Nepal Floods, Landslides
Kathmandu (PNA/Bernama) — At least 256 people were killed and 255 remain missing in floods and landslides over the past two months since the monsoon season began in June, The Kathmandu Post reports quoting Home Ministry officials.
More than 30,941 houses were damaged and property worth US$ 40 million was destroyed by flooding across Nepal, the English daily said.
According to the Home Ministry, 151,073 people were directly affected and 15,201 families displaced in the flooding disasters.
The government will provide relief items to affected residents and US$ 1,000 each to every displaced family.
Nepal is facing its worst floods and landslides in a decade and had called on individuals and organizations to extend support for rescue and relief operations.
India, China and the United States had recently pledged to give financial assistance to Nepal. (PNA/Bernama) LGI/UTB
