RIP-Roaring Action In Liam Neeson’s Latest Movie “The Commuter”

Published

on

Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra team up once again after an enviable track record with Non-Stop amassing $222.8m worldwide in 2014 and Unknown’s $130.8m in 2011, so teaming up again for another thrill ride in the latest action thriller “The Commuter” set on a train in New York, was a no-brainer.

“The Commuter” takes the audience out of the main location of the train to the outside world into the main character’s family home and into the office and bars: part of Michael’s (Neeson) daily routine. An ordinary day turns extraordinary when Michael gets on the train after his last day in the office, ready to face his family and admit that he has been fired and the family faces bankruptcy. Into the seat opposite him slides a woman, who is not one of the regular commuters Michael knows to nod hello to. She introduces herself to him as Joanna, played by Vera Farmiga, and before very long makes him a strange offer: something of hers has been stolen from her on the train and she needs help finding it. If he agrees to help, he’ll be richly compensated.

One of the crucial elements to cranking up the excitement of the film are the fight scenes. Stunt and fight co-ordinator Mark Vanselow has worked 16 times with Neeson so has perfected a succinct shorthand while training the actor which, according to producer Andrew Rona, has meant “there’s a real level of trust and we were able to push the boundaries of the stunt work and the jeopardy that we put him in because Liam completely has trust and faith in the filmmaking team”.

Always on Vanselow‘s mind is making what Neeson‘s character does plausible: “We try to do something that’s really grounded, that a real human can do. There are tons of wonderful superhero movies where people are flying all over the place but this is much more of an everyman kind of film and it depends on Liam’s character’s background. He was a cop but but a long time ago so he’s just a guy who has to deal with this situation in a realistic way. We choreographed the fights so that they work well with Liam’s size and physicality – he’s 6ft 4, after all – and for when he’s interacting with the other actors and their backgrounds and physicality. In a way, we’re creating a riveting dialogue between the characters. Liam is incredible, he really put the work in so the audience sees him, not a just bunch of stunt doubles.”

It was the everyman quality of the lead character that appealed to Neeson who knew it would also appeal to the audience. “Michael has been taking the same train for 10 years, five days a week and then one day gets fired because he’s hit the age of 60,” says the actor. “He doesn’t know how to tell his wife, and he’s double-mortgaged on his house. After having a drink in the local bar with an ex-cop friend of his, he takes the commuter train back to face the music and tell his wife and his son, who’s about to go to college, that they have no money. On the train a mysterious person sits beside him and asks him ‘Would you do one tiny little thing for $100,000?’ He’s not sure, but tempts him by asking him to find a bag with $25,000 in a compartment on the train. He finds the money and sets in motion the action.”

“The Commuter” opens January 10 in cinemas nationwide from Pioneer Films.

Deadliest Rescue Mission in “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” Begins January 24 Nationwide

Published

From (L-R), Katherine McNamara, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jacob Lofland, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Dylan O'Brien, Rosa Salazar, and Dexter Darden star in Twentieth Century Fox's "Maze Runner: The Death Cure."

Action reaches new heights in this mission-oriented third and final segment of The Maze Runner Series, “Maze Runner: The Death Cure.” The Wes Ball-directed adaptation of the bestselling James Dashner YA trilogy is a 20th Century Fox production. The screenplay was written by T.S. Nowlin. Producers are Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of The Gotham Group, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Productions Joe Hartwick, Jr., Wes Ball, and Lee Stollman.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” picks up roughly six months after the Scorch Trials ended. In the final battle of The Scorch the survivors of The Flare, a disease that has devastated the world’s population, have defined their purpose; to find a safe haven away from the influence of WCKD. This exciting conclusion of the Maze Runner trilogy reunites many of the original cast members from 2014’s The Maze Runner; Dylan O’Brien as Thomas; Kaya Scodelario as Teresa; Ki Hong Lee as Minho; Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt; Dexter Darden as Frypan and Patricia Clarkson as Dr. Ava Paige along with newer cast members from Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials; Giancarlo Esposito as Jorge, Rosa Salazar as Brenda, Aidan Gillen as Janson, Barry Pepper as Vince and Walton Goggins as Lawrence.

Uncertain if this “last city” had even survived, the “Gladers” knew that somehow gaining entry would be difficult. To then break in to the WKCD headquarters where Minho was being held, that was impossible. For Thomas, setting difficult goals was not unusual. As Dylan O’Brien says of his character, “In the first movie the challenge was to solve the maze, to break out of the glade. A big part of the group, led by Gally, wanted no part of that. They looked at the glade as their home and they were safe. In Scorch Trials we were out of the maze, had a building to live in and were taken care of but there was a price to pay. In this film, in Death Cure, Thomas wants to break in to the place that caused all of this to save his friend Minho, which he promised he’d do. Most thought it was a crazy plan.”

The final chapter gets even more WCKD in IMAX screens with the movie having an expanded ratio of 26% more of all scenes than the average cinemas. That’s 26% more of the action, suspense, and adventure! Coupled with IMAX’s gigantic screen, crystal-clear images, and powerful digital audio, it will feel like you’re truly part of the action.

End the final Mazer runner in the theatres where movies come alive – IMAX and SM Cinema! Book your tickets now on to www.smcinema.com. Download the SM Cinema app now through the App store and Google Play. For more information follow /SMCinema on facebook and @SM_Cinema on Instagram

No friend is left behind when “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” opens January 24 in all cinemas and in all IMAX screens nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Shaping to be this year’s major award frontrunners, 20th Century Fox’s / Fox Searchlight’s highly-acclaimed films “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” have already bagged major awards from the 75th Golden Globe Awards and the 23rd Critics’ Choice Awards.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is a darkly comedic drama from Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, commissioning three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated. A last stand erupts in as a mother is pushed to the edge by her daughter’s unsolved murder.

From this year’s Golden Globe Awards, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” has already won Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture – Martin McDonagh, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama – Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor – Sam Rockwell. The film also took home major awards in this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Acting Ensemble, Best Actress – Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor – Sam Rockwell.

A new form of love is about to take shape from master story teller, Guillermo del Toro – “The Shape of Water” is an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. Guillermo Del Toro merges the pathos and thrills of the classic monster movie tradition with shadowy film noir, then stirring in the heat of a love story like no other to explore the fantasies we all flirt with, the mysteries we can’t control and the monstrosities we must confront. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg.

This year’s Critics’ Choice Awards’ big winner, “The Shape of Water” won major awards as Best Film, Best Director, Best Production Design and Best Score. From the Golden Globe Awards, Guillermo Del Toro was awarded Best Director for a Motion Picture.
